Kirkland Minoxidil Review – 5 Reasons You Should Use it to Fight Hair Loss
Kirkland Minoxidil 5% Extra Strength is a hair growth product for those who have a general thinning of hair on the top of the scalp. The product contains minoxidil, the same FDA approved ingredient in Rogaine solution that’s clinically proven to regrow hair.
You can Buy Kirkland Minoxidil at Amazon which has a very good selection of Kirkland minoxidil products, including value packs of bottles and Kirkland Minoxidil Foam for sensitive scalps.
Kirkland Minoxidil Review
Here are 5 reasons to use Kirkland Minoxidil to fight hair loss:
1. Kirkland Minoxidil is cheap but very effective
5% minoxidil is the key ingredient many of the popular treatments to grow hair back and has been proven to be very effective. The main difference between Kirkland Minoxidil and the other brands is that Kirkland Minoxidil is far cheaper.
The low cost may be due to the fact that It does not contain any other ingredients such as DHT blockers or nutrients. When purchased from Amazon.com, the price of Kirkland Minoxidil can be even further lowered through deals on 2, 4, 6 and 12 month packages.
2. Kirkland Minoxidil is easy and quick to apply
It is recommended that you apply this product to dry or at least towel dried scalp and hair. Using the dropper style applicator that comes with each purchase of Kirkland Minoxidil, simply apply to the area(s) of your scalp where you want hair to grow. The dropper is even marked with a ML measurement. Let it dry for a little while as you continue to get ready in the morning or for bed at night. The entire process can be done in a minute or 2! You should wait 4 hours before shampooing your hair.
Important: Some shampoos coat the scalp and interfere with the absorption of minoxidil, so I use Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo. Just as importantly, this shampoo also reduces hair loss! Since you have to buy shampoo anyway, Alpecin is the perfect choice to use with your minoxidil routine.
You can read more about Alpecin in my Alpecin Review.

Kirkland Minoxidil Foam is a popular alternative for those who find the liquid creates itchiness or want even faster drying time.
If you use the foam form of minoxidil, apply it with the same things in mind you would with the liquid form. Be cautious of any scalp irritation, and consider the time between applications.
Wash your hands apply a half of one cap full of the foam to your scalp, and then massage it well into that area of your scalp. As with the liquid form, wait until the foam is dry before applying any other hair products.
Minoxidil For Women
It is recommended that women use 2% minoxidil because some side effects such as dermatitis and itching are more likely to occur with women. In 2014, 5% minoxidil foam was approved for women because the foam version is less likely to cause these side effects. Unlike men, women only require a minoxidil application once a day. Men are recommended to apply it twice daily.
3. Studies of 5% minoxidil show great success
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery released the results of a study that showed the effectiveness of 5% minoxidil in treating male-pattern hairloss. Of the 669 men who reported when results of minoxidil treatment were first noticeable, 13.9% reported results in the first month, 52.3% during the second month, and 33.8% during the third month.
With Kirkland Minoxidil being so affordable, results like this can be easily obtained on any budget within reason.
4. Kirkland Minoxidil is easy to purchase online
If you do a search online for Kirkland Minoxidil, you’ll quickly see how readily available it is to purchase online. Amazon, eBay and many other online sellers will show up in your search. Amazon continues to offer a wide variety of package deals on Kirkland Minoxidil foam and liquid, making it easy to get a great deal.
5. Kirkland Minoxidil can be combined with Lipogaine for excellent results.
As mentioned above, Kirkland Minoxidil contains only minoxidil to treat hair loss. A product called Lipogaine has 5% minoxidil, hair nutrients combining a hair growth stimulator, proprietary herbal blend DHT blockers and vitamins infused into one formula solution. You can learn more about this product in my Lipogaine review.
Naturally, to get these additional benefits combined with minoxidil, Lipogaine does cost more than Kirkland Minoxidil. It is recommended that minoxidil be applied to the thinning areas of your scalp twice a day, with at least 8 hours in between applications. By using Kirkland Minoxidil once a day and Lipogaine once a day, you get the recommended daily treatment of minoxidil and the benefits of the additional ingredients in Lipogaine every day. The benefit of doing this of course is that you are saving money by only having to use the more expensive Lipogaine once a day, allowing it to last twice as long.
I also use finasteride by splitting Proscar tablets, ProFolla AnaStim Ha Follicle Stimulator for trichogen, and vitamins to complete my daily routine – and all this together costs me less than when I used to take propecia! You can read more about a very effective and affordable daily treatment using these products here: Male Hair Loss Treatment and Daily Routine to Stimulate Hair Growth.
Keep in mind …
As with all treatments, be sure to be aware of the facts of using Kirkland Minoxidil including warnings, directions and other information. If you’d like more information after reading this Kirkland minoxidil review, you can find this information at drugs.com here: http://www.drugs.com/pro/mens-kirkland-minoxidil-extra-strength.html
I’m a firm believer in combining treatments to get the benefit of a variety of approaches to fight hair loss. Minoxidil is excellent, and adding it to a complete daily routine is a very effective way to stop that thinning hair from turning into a shiny scalp! Other options to consider using along with minoxidil include finasteride, Nizoral shampoo, low level laser devices, a PRP hair treatment, and more!
As for Kirkland brand minoxidil, you won’t find a better deal on a straight minoxidil liquid or foam solution!

Ive now used Kirkland Minoxidil for 1,5 years, I have been REALLY glad with the result I have even made a week by week pictures which show a great improvement in the start, BUT BEWARE!! – (link leads to spam and was removed by admin)
Yes its not Kirkland but its still “Minoxidil” Alternative you can google: “Impotens + Minoxidil”
I sadely have to stop using it now, but feel my manlyhood is more important than hair on top… Hopefully everything will return to normal, but it seems some mention that this has not happend to them.
I appreciate your input, but I have read very little to nothing about the small doses of minoxidil in the products I mention on this site ever causing those types of issues. Finasteride, possibly (I think it’s less than 2% of people) …Minoxidil NO.
He’s just another *&#$ spreading false information. If your %#$& is limp, your issue is a medical one, not a hairless product one. The internet is full of misinformed $%^& libeling good quality proven hair restoration solutions with their unrelated personal issues.
Can I use alpecin caffeine liquid and kirkland minoxidil 5% together?
Absolutely! They both work in completely different ways. Be sure to allow your hair to dry though before using minoxidil!
Good luck and ty for visiting the site,
HFK
In short, yes.
See, there are several aspects when fighting hair loss/initiating hair regrowth:
1. Minoxidil will widen the arteries and let hair follicles grow larger
2. caffeine will stimulate the hair follicles to grow faster. This means the ratio of lost/regrown hair that are day-to-day nature for every human will change in your advantage (hair faster regrowing vs hair naturally lost – you will have “more hair”)
3. DHT Blocker! DHT is the primary reason for male balding and by blocking it you will prevent hair loss in the future (or at least put it to a minimum). For that reason I’d recommend you a shampoo that is able to block DHT on your scalp (Alpecin doesn’t have active DHT Blocker as far as I know so you might want to use one like Hair Surge, or Hair Restoration Labs shampoo) You can check out active ingredients that block DHT here: https://www.groomingadepts.com/hair-loss/treatments/ultrax-labs/ultrax-labs-hair-surge-review/
PS: When using anything in your hair (liquid, styling products etc.) after using minoxidil, you should always wait until the minoxidil has been absorbed by your scalp or you will reduce the effectivity.
Hi. I’m in my mid 20s. Just wondering if it’s ok to use the minoxidil solution with the alpecin solution (not shampoo) at the same time. I’m afraid that it might somehow reduce the efficacy of minoxidil.
Thanks a mil.
Hey, thanks for dropping by the site. There’s no reason why the Alpecin liquid should interfere with minoxidil benefits. They work in completely different ways. However, I would not use them within a close time frame, because you would need one to absorb into the scalp and dry before adding the next. I prefer the Alpecin shampoo because I use enough topicals already, and shampoo is something we all use anyway. I am simply looking at it from a time management perspective to get the maximum benefits without the hair loss routine monopolizing my day.
I also use Nizoral shampoo a few times a week. After reading up on it, I started using it a while back and I really like how it’s been working out. I plan to pop up an article on this soon, and share the info. Nizoral is cheap and only needs to be used about every three days. It reduces any irritation form the alcohol in minoxidil and helps hair growth.
Good luck and thanks for the comment!
Comment Text* doest it work for complete bald
Hi Piyuta,
Unfortunately, the more hair loss progresses, the less beneficial any of the topical or oral treatments become. Hair follicles affedted by male patern baldness shrink until they produce no hair at all. By the time they produce no hair at all, it is very difficult to nurture them back to a healthy hair producing follicle. That being said, I can’t say it’s impossible but from the information I have gathered over the years I can confidently say the chances are slim at best.
There may be some new treatments in the future that use stem cells to implant hair follicles but this may be a while to come. You could certainly consider a hair transplant, so long as you have enough donor hair.
All the best and thanks for visiting the site!

Hello, is there any kirkland minoxidil foam for women? I could not find it in amazon nor ebay. All were just usable for men!
Hi Mary,
As I understand, the foam does not need to be gender specific – in 2014, 5% minoxidil foam was approved for women because the foam version is less likely to cause the side effects typically experienced by 5% minoxidil liquids. These side effects are not highly dangerous but mostly frustrating, and include dermatitis and itching. With the foam versions, you should be good to go!
Also, please note that women only need to apply minoxidil once a day (as opposed to twice, as is recommended for men).
I hope that answer helps, and thanks for visiting Hair for Keeps!

I have ordered this product “Kirkland 5% Minoxidil Hair Regrowth” .. can you explain me it is used for facial hair and beard growth.. I dont have hair loss.. only minus is i have small beards in my face..
Plz explain it is useful one for beard growth
Minoxidil is perhaps the only hair loss treatment used for the scalp that can grow hair on your face. Many other hair loss treatments such as finasteride work by reducing DHT levels. The problem with using these for beard growth is that DHT makes scalp hair thin out, but it makes facial hair thicker… so reducing DHT may not be the best choice for growing a full thick beard!
We are not 100% sure how minoxidil strengthens hair follicles, but we do know that minoxidil is a vasodilator – It makes blood vessels wider. It is also thought that it may have something to do with how minoxidil interacts with prostaglandins – but that’s another story!
I’ve read several reports onine from guys that have tried minoxidil for their beard, and claim it worked very well. It does take a while though so patience and deication are still a big factor here. The best results usually come from users who’ve applied minoxidil for at least 1 year. So, it takes dedication, but minoxidil does seem to work for beard growth.
Hope this answers your question!
Thanks,
JB – HFK
Studies have shown DHT is solely responsible for hair growth speed, not density. Testosterone and androgen receptor quantity on the face determine how full your beard gets. Feel free to look it up, this was studied in men with low vs high DHT. As for fin, it doesn’t lower DHT to nothing unlike Proscar or Dutasteride. It merely gets it to levels known to cause minimal damage to the scalp. Using propecia has been linked to higher testosterone levels as your body compensates for the lower DHT ratio. Hence, thicker but slower growing facial and body hair has been frequently reported anecdotally on the hair loss message boards. Speaking personally I can attest to that after six months of using it daily. Receptors are the key….it’s why you see plenty of bald guys with high DHT who lack beards or men on steroids with high Testosterone who can’t grow them either….they have lower receptor counts on their face (but not their heads, hence the baldness).
Thanks for the input J, I always appreciate insight from others who have experience using hair loss drugs. Please keep in mind though that his question was regarding whether or not minoxidil can be useful for promoting beard growth. Reports from others who have tried, combined with how minoxidil works for hair growth, suggest the answer is yes. Also, it is worth nothing that finasteride, dusteride, finopecia, propecia, and proscar are all basically finasteride under different brand/label and dosages.
Thanks for the info regarding the relationship between androgen receptor quantity on the face and beard fullness. I have read this as well, and it is very interesting.
Oh, and you mentioned you have been using propecia for 6 months – how’s it working out? I have used finasteride in various forms for years, and myself and the readers on this site always like to hear how it’s working out for others.
Thanks,
HFK
Hi there,
I am so happy that I found your ‘hair for keeps’ page. I have been hunting around for reviews of products since my latest round of minoxidil product is not working.
I am a woman who has been using a generic product sold at Kroger’s supermarkets with great success for the past year. I have very long hair and started losing hair on the crown of my head once reaching menopause. The generic product worked great.
Because I wasn’t near a Kroger’s store, I stopped in at a local drugstore and picked up their store brand Daylogic (you can delete that if need be) and in the past month my hair has been falling out by the handful. My hair is visibly thinning at the crown and along the forehead area where my bangs grow. It’s been a nightmare. So I decided to do some searching and found your blog. Either I got a bad batch OR there is a different success rate for different products for different people.
I am, as a result of your blog, going to try the 5% Kirkland minoxidil foam and use it just once a day. I figured that would be acceptable and I can buy it on Amazon. For some reason, they don’t stock women’s products.
Your recommendation of the caffeine shampoo is a good one and I will try it.
I believe that my DHT levels may be higher than many women after menopause because before menopause my androgens were always a bit too high. Would you be so kind as to recommend a DHT blocker product for women that can be used in concert with the caffeine shampoo and the Kirkland foam?
Thanks for your blog. I’ll come back and let you know how things work out.
Hi Maryis,
I’m glad you found this site of use and I really do hope this works out for you. Hair loss is very frustrating and it occurs so differently in women, that it’s important to understand the potential causes and get a proper diagnosis. I would strongly recommend that you see a doctor (if you have not already) and rule out any issues that would require treatment of their own.
There are factors such as stress, diet, auto-immune deficiencies etc that should always be ruled out!
Minoxidil is definitely among the most popular treatments for female pattern hair loss. As I mentioned, before looking at blocking DHT it would be wise to make sure that DHT is the cause, by getting hormone levels checked. The most effective DHT blocker is Finasteride, but this is not usually recommended for women, with the exception of unique cases. For example if you have elevated androgen levels (Medical tests can show this). For blocking DHT I can only recommend natural products for women at this time, although Lipogaine does have a solution formulated specifically for women, and this is my favorite minoxidil product – but it does cost more than the generic stuff. Other than that I suggest hair growth foods and exploring natural supplements available online. I wish I had more info to offer you, but finding out if your hair loss is female pattern or not is the first step!
You can address inflammation in your scalp with Nizoral shampoo, and this can also make a significant difference if inflammation is an issue.
I wish you all the best and please update us!

Hii…sir…I’m using Tugain(minoxidil 5%) …is this help for my beard…. I am 18 and Zero moustache and beard.. What can I do…Sir?!
Hi Arjun,
The minoxidil should improve facial hair growth. Based on the mechanism through which minoxidil works, it really does make sense that it would work on facial hair, just as it does on the scalp. Many men report a significant growth of new hair in the beard area after using minoxidil for between 1-6 months. If you try it and it works out please let us know!

Thanks this is a good review, I think most of the Kirkland stuff in the UK is sold on —SITE LINK REMOVED— but I’m not sure. I might just buy it on Amazon, your page looks good so I might check those out. Just trying to decide.
Thanks! Yeah give Amazon a try, you’ll be pleased!
